FOMO = Fear of Missing Out!
Kickstarters, gaming conventions, cool stuff! There’s so much of these on these days it’s got difficult to focus! Especially for someone like me whose time is limited in regard to leisure pursuits (and wallet!).
I did think about heading down to London for Dragonmeet next week but it’s an expensive weekend in London’s Hammersmith. I no longer have the energy to run enough RPGs to gain credit for accommodation (which is limited anyway), and its a slog to get there by train or plane. It is a great chance to network for freelancers, and there’s usually some new releases, panels etc.
I’ve found I’m using these events to create opportunities to network rather than play games (UK Games Expo for RolePlay Haven, and Tabletop Scotland for my RPG writing). I’ve little doubt I’m missing opportunities at Dragonmeet, but on the other hand I’m not spending anywhere near as much.
I’ve been trying to expand the RPG library idea I had, but it’s been hard with a number of recent project deadlines at both my day job and pro writing gigs mean that I’ve had to put several of my personal projects to one side. One of these was merging my old TheMandragora.com site into this site – there’s likely to be a few broken links and I’ve ditched a lot of the downloadable content. If you’re after something in particular drop me a line via the contact form.
It’s become a little odd I never really write for pleasure – I jot down ideas in notebooks (oh, so many!) many of which never see anything more than couple of sentences for a setting. I still refuse to go anywhere near D&D 2024 right now, but I’ve been looking my old ideas Archive Dumpster and older notebooks (the ones I can read the handwriting in anyway!). I don’t really consider myself an RPG designer – I don’t create rules or playtest systems, but do love creating settings
I’ve several ideas for settings coming soon and more than a few paid writing gigs. The second volume of Musketeers vs. Cthulhu: All the Cardinal’s Men will go to Kickstarter early next year (it’s already written). I’ve ideas for several sci-fi and horror settings, plus a fantasy setting, and then there’s my existing freelance requests.
I’m also REALLY hoping to get something estblished in regards to the Edinburgh Roleplaying Archive. I’ve cut back on a lot of my GMing and reduced my presence at RolePlay Haven nights since stepping down as Branch Manager, giving me far more time to focus on my own projects.
